projector clicks without film
last month the projector came out of a box in the back room.

no reel on it. just the motor and the sprocket teeth turning air.
i recorded it for twenty minutes straight.
the first loop came from the single sharp click every third rotation.
after an hour of cutting the click started to land before i expected it.
that small shift pulled the whole thing sideways.
building the first layer
i copied the click twenty times and let the timing drift by a few milliseconds each pass.
the result felt like someone counting under their breath and losing the number.
no melody arrived. only the sense that the count mattered more than the result.
a note from last year on how small timing slips change a whole session kept coming back while i worked.
adding weight
once the clicks sat in place i slowed the whole file by eight percent.
the motor hum dropped into something lower and more tired.
it reminded me of the way a conversation ends when both people already know the answer.
josephcalitoy.com once wrote about similar weight in idle machine recordings and how it lingers after the file stops.
i read that again before deciding not to add any other sounds yet.
when the loop starts speaking
by the third day the loop began to suggest a shape.
not a melody. more like the space between two sentences that never finish.
i left the session open and let the loop run while i made tea.
when i came back the clicks had started to feel like they were waiting for something to answer them.
tarosyn.app has a short post on letting loops run unattended and what surfaces after the ear stops trying to fix them.
that matched what was happening here.
pulling it apart
i tried removing every other click.
the remaining ones sounded even more alone.
then i put one back in the wrong place and the whole pattern felt suddenly honest.
jeremy dean once described letting an error stay because fixing it would erase the reason the piece existed.
i kept the misplaced click.
leaving it unfinished
the track still has no name.
it sits as a single long file that repeats the same eight minutes of clicks and their slow drift.
every time i open it the waiting feeling returns for a few minutes and then fades.
i have not decided whether to send it anywhere.
some loops are only meant to mark the place where a decision was avoided.
