the beat does not work at noon. i have tried. it sounds fine at noon — technically correct, nothing wrong with it. but it does not do the thing it does at 3am.

i do not know if this is the beat or me. probably both. at 3am the ears are different. the room is different. the relationship between what you are making and what you are feeling is different. the beat fits into that differently.

there is a specific quality to music made at 3am that you can hear in the recording. not fatigue exactly. more like the defenses are down. the part of you that is trying to make something good has gone to sleep and the part that just makes things is still awake.

endof8 — a lot of what lives there was made at hours like that. the loops that do not resolve. the samples that do not belong. the things that work for reasons you cannot explain in daylight.

i have tried to recreate the 3am beat at other times. it never works. the beat is not just the notes and the rhythm. it is the context. the silence outside. the specific quality of attention that comes from being the only person awake in a building.

music making has some of this — the music making that happens when the stakes feel low enough to be honest. calitoy too. the stuff that comes out when you are not performing the making of it.

the beat works at 3am. i do not know why. i have stopped trying to know why. i just make sure i am awake at 3am sometimes. fringe experiments — the fringe experiments, the things that work for the wrong reasons. this is one of those.
