there's a loop i've been sitting with for three weeks. eight bars. it resolves on the seventh bar and then the eighth bar just... doesn't close. it goes back to the beginning but it doesn't feel like it's going back. it feels like it's waiting.

i've tried ending it. tried adding a ninth bar that closes the phrase. tried cutting it to four bars. tried changing the chord on bar eight. nothing works. the loop wants to stay open.

what open phrases do

there's a thing in music theory called an imperfect cadence — a phrase that ends on the dominant chord instead of the tonic. it creates tension. it implies continuation. the ear expects resolution and doesn't get it, which keeps the listener leaning forward.

most pop music resolves. most loops don't. that's part of what makes a loop a loop — the seam is invisible, the phrase circles back without landing. but some loops feel more unresolved than others. some feel like they're actively asking a question.

the songwriting tradition has a lot of ways to handle this — the bridge that finally resolves the tension, the key change that reframes the question, the outro that lets the phrase breathe out. but in loop-based music, you don't always get those tools. you're working with the loop itself.

i've been thinking about systems thinking in music — the way a loop is a system, and the way an unresolved loop is a system with an open output. it keeps running. it keeps asking. maybe that's the point. maybe the loop that won't close is the most honest thing i've made.
