it's been sitting in a folder for two years. still don't know what it belongs to.

music production beatmaking samples

it's a sample. maybe four seconds. something recorded in a kitchen, i think — there's a faint hum underneath it that sounds like a refrigerator. the main sound is something being set down on a counter. ceramic on tile. a specific weight to it.

i've tried it in maybe thirty tracks. it never fits. it's always slightly wrong — too heavy, or the wrong tempo, or it pulls the track somewhere it doesn't want to go. but i can't delete it.

the the music side has some thoughts on this — the sound that doesn't fit anywhere but that you keep. i think it's about the sound having its own logic that you haven't found the context for yet.

or maybe it just doesn't belong in a track. maybe it belongs somewhere else. a film, maybe. or nothing. maybe some sounds are just sounds.

the calitoy.com has the archive. the end of 8 archive has the end of 8 notes. and signal and noise has some signal-and-noise thinking that might be relevant — the idea that not everything that's interesting is useful.

i'm keeping the sample. i don't know why. i just know i'm not ready to not have it.
