the loop ends. there's a gap. then it starts again.

the silence between loops

most people treat that gap as dead space. something to minimize. you want the loop to feel seamless, continuous, like it never stopped. that's the conventional goal.

i've been doing the opposite lately.

the gap is where the loop breathes. it's where you hear what the loop actually is, because for a moment it's not there. the absence defines the presence. you can't know what something sounds like until you've heard it stop.

i've been working on a piece over at experimental sound that's built entirely around the gap. the loop is almost incidental — it's just a way to create the silence that follows it. the silence is the composition. the loop is the setup.

this connects to something i've been thinking about in terms of culture and creativity — the way culture works in cycles, how the space between things is where meaning accumulates. the gap between albums. the gap between posts. the gap between conversations.

the stuff coming out of music making lately has this quality — songs that know when to stop. that's rarer than it sounds.

i don't know if this piece will go anywhere. it might just be a thing i made to understand something. that's fine. the understanding is the point.

the silence between loops is where the music actually lives.
